Anisa Poonja is a highly experienced Yoga Teacher, qualified Nutritionist and Registered Nurse, graduated from a Bachelor of Public Health Nutrition & Bachelor of Nursing at Griffith University, Gold Coast, Australia. Anisa has since practiced as a Nurse and Nutritionist in the community at a Private Holistic Clinic where she administered IV (Intravenous) Nutrient Therapy. She has previously worked as a Holistic Nurse, Zen mindfulness walking teacher & Yoga Teacher at Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat, a world class Health Retreat in Tallebudgera, Gold Coast Hinterland.


Anisa’s first trip to India was instigated by an opportunity as part of her Nutrition degree to conduct a Qualitative Research project investigating the effectiveness of an NGO in reducing malnutrition in mothers and children in rural Bangalore, in the south of India.


Once Anisa finished her research and graduated from her degree, she returned to India and lived in the Himalayas for about 4 months where she immersed herself in the study and practice of Yoga (Iyengar style, Hatha & Ashtanga yoga), Ayurveda and Buddhism.

She completed her first 10days Silent Buddhist Meditation retreat in the Himalayas, she then went on to study the fundamentals of Ayurveda under the wing of Dr Shivani as well as undergoing a 10days Ayurvedic Detox – Panchakarma. Anisa Poonja completed her Teacher Training recognized by Yoga Alliance and was certified under the guidance of her Teacher Vijay an older and renowned Ashtanga Yoga Teacher based in the Himalayas.


Since her return to Australia Anisa Poonja has been teaching yoga and nutrition workshops and running retreats locally, Gold Coast, Byron Bay and internationally, India and Africa. She has also previsouly established and managed BSKT Yoga Studio just above BSKT Café at Nobbys Beach for a year while completing her second degree in Nursing. 

Anisa Poonja met her principal Teacher, Mark, shortly after she returned from India. She has studied and practiced intensely under the wing of her Teacher for over 8 years. Her other teachers that she has trained with over the years include; Kino Macgregor, David Swenson, Dena Kingsberg, Michelle Cassidy, Nicky Knoff, Geoff Brooks, and Cameron Shayne.


Anisa then felt that is was time for her to open her own studio - Sprout Yoga & Nutrition Currumbin Centre. After three amazing years of running teacher trainings, workshops, classes, events and managing her studio Anisa decided that it was time for her to enter into a new phase in her life. Anisa is now furthering her education as a Fusion Acupressure Therapist and will be available for bookings in clinic from the 1st of April 2020.

Anisa’s personal practice is up to full 3rd series and learning to absorb 4th series Ashtanga Yoga. She is a Zen practitioner and has attended several silent Zen meditation retreats over the years. Anisa has also dived into yin yoga - completing a yin yoga teacher training with Truth Robinson, Chinese Doctor/acupuncturist based in Sydney.


Anisa’s life and passion is yoga and enabling psycho-emotional healing and to be of service to all her students from all walks of life. She has the ability to cater for complete beginners to advanced yoga practitioners with much support, compassion and discernment.


Anisa Poonja greatest influence on her teaching has been directly from her beloved teacher Mark & her grandmaster H.W.L Poonjaji (lovingly remembered and known as Papaji) who was a teacher of self-enquiry and devotee of Sri Ramana Maharshi. Other significant teachings have been from Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Master Hogen-San and from the great gurus of the lineages Sri K. Pattabhi Jois of Ashtanga Yoga and Yogacharya BKS founder of Iyengar Yoga.
